WATERCOLOUR PRODUCT STYLING

Paint your own backdrop, style a real product, and walk away with a visual that's actually post-worthy.

About the

Course

Good product styling isn’t just about what looks nice, it’s about communicating a story that connects with the right customer.

This course teaches you how to use traditional watercolour techniques as a visual design tool: creating mood through colour, developing styled compositions with real products and props, and translating a brand idea into a complete, presentable visual concept.

Over two days, you’ll move through the full styling process, from defining your customer and brand direction, to painting a watercolour backdrop, to assembling and presenting a final styled scene. Everything is guided, hands-on, and designed for beginners with no prior art or styling experience.

By the end of the course, you’ll walk away with a watercolour background you painted yourself, a complete A3 styling sketch, and a final styled product setup, ready for presentation or content use.

What you’ll learn in this course:

  • How to identify styling directions based on target customers, brand identity, and visual themes
  • How to select suitable products and props for visual styling
  • Core watercolour techniques: Washes, blending, layering, and texture, applied to real styling decisions
  • How to use colour theory to build cohesive, brand-aligned colour palettes
  • Simple layout and composition principles to enhance product focus
  • How to develop a styling concept from sketch to final visual
  • How to assemble and present a complete styled product display using minimal elements
  • How to calculate and present a basic project cost estimate

Curriculum

Customer Profiling & Brand Alignment

Before any art begins, you set the thinking foundation. This module is about understanding who you’re designing for, and translating that into a clear visual direction.

  • Understanding customer demographics and how they shape styling decisions
  • Defining your target customer profile: who is this for, what brand would use this, what kind of product fits?
  • Identifying styling types that match a brand, minimal, bold, editorial, playful
  • Translating a customer profile into a visual mood using watercolour colour strips and texture swatches
  • Activity: Define your customer profile and brand direction, then create a watercolour mood swatch that captures the visual feel

( 02 )

Creating Visual Elements

Turn your brand thinking into visual tools. This module teaches the core watercolour techniques you’ll use throughout the course, always connected to real styling decisions.

  • Watercolour techniques: washes, blending, layering, and texture, and how each supports a different styling mood
  • Mixing 2–3 colour combinations and creating background styles: soft, bold, and neutral
  • Introduction to products and props: choose from café-style items (coffee, cake, drinks) and standardised props (plate, spoon, napkin, leaf)
  • Sketch practice: learn simple shapes and layout structures (product, props, base surface) through guided 2-minute drill rounds
  • Activity: Select 1 product and 2 props, then create 2–3 background colour styles using your chosen palette

( 03 )

Styling Concept Development

Build your complete styling concept before you execute. This module bridges your brand thinking and your watercolour skills into a clear, planned visual.

  • Creating a watercolour moodboard: colours inspired by a visual theme reference, texture washes, and overall visual feel
  • Developing your styling sketch: plan product placement, background colour, and prop arrangement on paper
  • Understanding grouping principles for props and how to use them to support a themed concept
  • Translating your sketch into a final watercolour backdrop, painted based on your concept plan
  • Activity: Complete a full A5 sketch plan showing your product, base surface, 2 props, and background colour indication, this becomes your Day 2 build guide

( 04 )

Styling Execution & Presentation

Bring everything together into a finished, presentable styled concept. This is where your watercolour artwork, product, and props become a complete visual proposal.

  • Documenting your concept: articulate your style direction, product choice, colour rationale, and target customer
  • Calculating total project cost including props, decorations, labour, and a 15% contingency
  • Assembling your final styled scene: use your painted watercolour backdrop with your chosen product and props
  • Presenting your concept in a gallery walk, explaining your styling intent, customer target, and design choices to peers
  • Assessment: submit your A5 sketch plan, watercolour background, styled setup photo, concept answers, and cost calculation
